Foundations of Emotional Intelligence Copy

We all are aware of what Intelligence is, that ability to learn and apply knowledge and skills. We assume that smart people are intelligent. Emotional Intelligence is the other kind of smart. It affects how we handle things like emotions, our decision making processes, and decipher our social interactions in order to achieve positive results. In essence it is your self- and situational-awareness, the interpretation of what you see and what you do. Unlike intelligence, which is the same throughout your life-span, EI is a set of skills that are flexible and can be developed and improved with practice. The more you use it, the better it becomes.

Your ability to interpret and understand your emotions, and to be aware of them as you are interacting, is your self-awareness. Your interactions may be with yourself, the environment, or other people. Situational-awareness includes your ability to realize how you are interpreting the situation, along with how others are contributing to the interaction based on their emotions. EI is an awareness of not only your emotions, but your ability to pick up on other's emotions.

Emotional Intelligence has been found to be a strong predictor of success in performance, whether it is in sport, business, or in life. EI has been linked to our ability to handle stress, to our time-management skills, to our communication skills, to the ability to trust and be trusted, to anger management, to social skills, and to personal accountability; a whole host of critical skills. EI has been found to influence most everything you do. Many people associate these skills to a person's personal character.

Why is Emotional Intelligence so important? What you do and say are positive or negative determinants in your daily life. In order to be high in your level of EI you have to understand how your brain works. Basically and simply stated stimuli, received through your senses, enters your brain through your spinal cord. The stimulus whether it is vision, sound, feel, smell, taste, or perhaps a combination is picked up through sensory receptors and the information travels to the brain through the spinal cord. From there the information is sent to the limbic system of the brain. Here is where emotions are generated and emotion is attached to the sense which creates an emotional reaction. The information then is communicated to the frontal lobe of the brain or what is considered your rational brain where you decide your response, which elicits some behavior. If we respond in a negative manner, negative things happen. However, as you grow your EI and become more aware of your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors and take control of them you respond in a positive manner and guess what? More positive things happen and you become more successful each time! Once you train your brain and put into practice the various strategies taught in our Boost Boot Camp, your positive behaviors become a part of your daily life!

Emotional Intelligence is a very important skill to possess. It means being aware that emotions can drive our behavior and impact people (positively and negatively).
